Human Evolution

Life began on Earth about 3.8 billion years ago. Humans have been around for the past 250,000 years or so. What will we look like in another 250,000 years? Some experts think humans are done with biological evolution. Others think we may experience rapid, drastic biological changes once we become a space-faring species. Astronauts experience muscle atrophy, lower bone density, and weaker immune systems. When they are isolated from the rest of humanity, a human colony may evolve into a new offshoot of Homo Sapiens.

Collective Learning

Unlike other species, humans participate in collective learning. As we develop new skills, we teach them to each other and pass them down to our descendants. This introduces cultural and technological evolution to the conversation. Alex Mesoudi describes cultural evolution as “…the idea that human cultural change––that is, changes in socially transmitted beliefs, knowledge, customs, skills, attitudes, languages, and so on––can be described as a Darwinian evolutionary process that is similar in key respects (but not identical) to biological/genetic evolution”.

In his book, Mankind In Transition, Masse Bloomfield describes how humans will develop a stable, automated society. We will also evolve into a new species. Eventually, human colonies will live in distant star systems. Finally, in this new society, everyone will have everything they want without physical effort.
