Doomsday Prep
Since the beginning of time, we’ve thought the end is near. So far, it hasn’t happened, but that won’t stop people from preparing for it. 22% of Americans think the world will end during their lifetime. Doomsday preppers have many different strategies. Some build underground bunkers. Others stockpile food, water, and ammunition. Still others teach their cats to hunt. Whatever their strategy, they all believe they’re prepared for the imminent apocalypse.
Notes:
National Geographic’s Doomsday Preppers is an incredible source of doom porn. They tend to focus on the most absurd forms of preparation. For example, this family that is turning stuffed raccoons into IEDs.
This feature from the Huffington Post offers some great insight into the mind of a doomsday prepper. The author, a former prepper, describes the feeling of control it gave her. Additionally, she claims it made her feel like a good parent, preparing her kids for worst-case scenarios. Lastly, she gained a sense of superiority over those who weren’t prepared.
Y2K was almost like Christmas for doomsday preppers. While researching, we found this article from the 12/27/99 edition of the New York Daily News. From the article: “Anabel Yu of Fresh Meadows, Queens, and her husband, Pau, loaded their cart with water. ‘Everyone said it’s okay, but how do you know?’ she asked.”
