Notes:
The Battle of Los Angeles is one of the more fascinating UFO cases. In February of 1942, the U.S. military detected an unidentified flying object above Los Angeles. The military sounded air raid sirens, and fired thousands of rounds at the object. The firefight killed five civilians and damaged many buildings and vehicles.
Betty and Barney Hill were one of the first people to report being abducted by aliens. Late one night in 1961, they were driving home to New Hampshire. First, they saw a strange light following their car, and pulled over to investigate. Their next memory was being back in their car, 35 miles from where they pulled over. Later, Betty and Barney recalled being taken aboard an alien spaceship. They reported seeing gray aliens who performed a variety of tests on them. The aliens showed Betty a star map of their home system. She was able to recreate this star map later, and pointed to Zeta Reticuli as the aliens’ home star system.
J. Allen Hynek was an astronomer and UFO researcher. Most notably, he created the close encounter classification system. On one end of the scale, people report seeing lights in the sky. On the other end, people report boarding an alien spaceship. Steven Spielberg’s film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind popularized the Hynek scale.
