The Golden Record

In 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes. Their mission is to study the outer edges of our solar system. However, they also had a secondary mission. A very special, golden record is stashed aboard each probe. The record contained greetings in 55 different languages, nature sounds, and 90 minutes of music. The record is also engraved with images describing humans and life on Earth. The Voyager probes are still operating, and is currently 13 billion miles away from Earth. This makes them the furthest human made objects from Earth.

Golden Record

Carl Sagan was the chair of the team responsible for choosing the contents of the record.  According to Sagan, “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this ‘bottle’ into the cosmic ‘ocean’ says something very hopeful about life on this planet.”

The Arecibo Message

In 1974, Frank Drake and Carl Sagan sent the Arecibo message into space. They sent it toward globular star cluster M13, roughly 25,000 light years away. The message contained our planet’s location in our solar system, the atomic numbers of some elements, and information about our DNA.
