Dilukshi Nissanka
As soon as she could speak, Dilukshi Nissanka spoke of her previous life. She claimed she had drowned in a river in a town about 80 miles from where she was born. To her parents’ dismay, she refused to call them mother and father and requested to be taken home to her previous parents. When Dilukshi was five, her parents finally gave in and agreed to try and find her original parents. They sent out a list of the things Dilukshi remembered about her previous life. This included the following:
- She named the small town in which she used to live, as well as a specific nickname for their neighborhood that she herself had come up with.
- A stream with a footbridge over it skirts the paddyfield near the house.
- Our house is near Heenkolla’s boutique.
- There is a public drinking cistern (pinthaliya) at Dambulla temple.
- Father is owner of a metal quarry.
In total, she listed 17 items. Of those 17 items, 12 were confirmed. The five that were wrong were all people’s names. After reading the list, a man by the name of Dharmadasa Ranatunga recognized the girl as his daughter. He contacted her parents and they agreed to meet. Dilukshi girl led the way to Ranatunga’s house, where he and his wife accepted her as their former daughter after alleged recognitions of some objects and persons at the Ranatunga’s home and verifications of statements made by Dilukshi.
