What If Earth Is A Living Organism?

Sam McCullough shows up to talk about the Gaia hypothesis. Sam thinks James Lovelock might have just been a weirdo, Spencer suggests we’re doing our civil duty by keeping the planet warm until the reptilians get back, and Ryan really wants to throw things off of boats.

James Lovelock – Gaia

In the 1970s, James Lovelock proposed a theory that Earth is a self-regulating system. Organic and inorganic elements interact to maintain the conditions necessary for life. In the last 4 billion years, the energy Earth receives from the sun has increased by 25%. However, the surface temperature has remained conducive to life. Lovelock also cites the fact that the oceans have remained at 3.5% for billions of years. The percentage happens to be exactly what most ocean life requires.

Lovelock doesn’t suggest that these processes are conscious, simply that they work in tandem with each other. He also suggests that we may be pushing Gaia’s self-regulation past its limits. The pendulum may swing back towards the center, but it may be too late for humans when it does.

The hypothesis hasn’t gained much support from the scientific community. In fact, it has been openly ridiculed by some. The primary criticism is a lack of any known mechanism that could be responsible for the regulation. Critics have also suggested that homeostasis occurs naturally, and doesn’t need any outside regulation.
