The Mandela Effect
In it’s simplest form, the Mandela Effect is a collective false memory. It earned it’s name when many people recalled Nelson Mandela dying in the 1980s. In reality, Mandela lived until 2013. Others have suggested that well-known facts occasionally change for a large group of people. This of course, seems much less likely than a large group of people assuming a man in his 90s had died.
Another common example is the children’s book series The Berenstain Bears. Some people recall the name being spelled Berenstein, rather than Berenstain. They insist that it was originally spelled Berenstein, and at some point, that fact changed. Relying on the 20-year old memories of children learning to read probably isn’t the best form of data collection, but what do we know…?
Our episode focuses on the example of Sinbad’s 1990s genie movie, Shazaam. Much of the internet insists that this movie exists, but it does not. It is most likely a false memory based on the movie Kazaam, starring Shaquille O’Neal. Additionally, a preview for Kazaam ran before Sinbad’s movie First Kid. This may have further blurred the line between Kazaam and Sinbad. Sinbad himself has said that he never played a genie in a movie, but the belief persists for some.
